Downtown Seattle is at its most magical in December. Window displays light up, the city fills with festive music and there's a sense of excitement that kids feel the moment you step outside. If you're planning a holiday day out with the family, here's how to make it one to remember.

Start with Story Time with Santa at The Toy Room

This year, Fog Room at The Charter Hotel Seattle is opening The Toy Room, a vintage toy shop holiday pop-up 16 floors above downtown. On Sunday mornings, it becomes the setting for Story Time with Santa.

Surrounded by nostalgic toys, twinkling lights and teddy bears floating overhead in hot air balloons, Santa reads a holiday story to the group before visiting with each family. Kids can sip hot cocoa, explore the toy shop and take photos with Santa, while parents enjoy coffee, cocoa or a festive cocktail and one of the best views in the city.

  • When: Sundays, November 22 through December 20, 2026
  • Sessions: 10 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 3 PM
  • Where: Fog Room, 16th floor, The Charter Hotel Seattle, 1610 2nd Ave
  • Tickets: Required. Food and drinks are sold separately, including a special Story Time with Santa menu.

Dressing up is encouraged, so bring out the holiday outfits. Families are welcome to take their own photos, too.

Make a Day of It Downtown

The Charter Hotel Seattle sits in the heart of downtown, so it's easy to build a full holiday day around your Santa visit.

Wander Pike Place Market

Just a short walk away, Pike Place Market is a family favorite any time of year. Watch the fishmongers, sample local treats and pick up a few holiday gifts from local makers.

See the Holiday Lights and Windows

Downtown's shopping district dresses up for the season with festive lights and decorated windows. A stroll through the retail core is a free and easy way to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

Head to the Waterfront

Seattle's waterfront offers fresh air, sweeping views of Elliott Bay and plenty of room for kids to explore before or after your visit.

Tips for a Smooth Family Outing

  • Book early. Story Time with Santa sessions are limited and December Sundays fill quickly.
  • Go cashless. Fog Room is a cashless property.
  • Plan for the morning. Sunday sessions make it easy to do Santa first, then lunch and an afternoon downtown.
  • Make it a staycation. Turn the outing into an overnight with a stay at The Charter Hotel Seattle, right downstairs.

A New Family Tradition

Some holiday memories stick with kids for years. A story with Santa in a vintage toy shop high above the city just might be one of them.
